Aimee Mann – Brooklyn (Steely Dan cover)
If you missed the whole brouhaha when Steely Dan dropped Aimee Mann as their opening act, it’s too long to recap here. To skip to the end, Mann tweeted, “All is forgiven if Donald [Fagan] just tells me what Brooklyn is about.” And he did! So, at a recent show at City Winery, she covered it. Laura Dern. Naomi Watts. And, of course, Kyle MacLachlan. David Lynch has long had muses, actors and actresses he’s returned to again and again through his career. All three of these appear in the new Twin Peaks, as does his latest muse, Chrysta Bell. The difference is, she’s not an actress. FBI Agent Preston is her first role.
Bell is a musician, one Lynch has recorded with on several albums and EPs. Her music falls right in the Lynchian mold, creepy and haunted and dark. And for her new song, she teams up with the other master for creepy and haunted and dark, This Mortal Coil co-founder John Fryer. In honor of her new role, it’s a cover of Julee Cruise’s classic Twin Peaks theme “Falling.” Continue reading »

This Week on Bandcamp rounds up our favorite covers to hit the site in the past seven days.
This week’s Bandcamp spotlight takes a somewhat unusual focus: covers of imaginary artists. Three of the featured songs come from unusual origins, to say the least. One is a song by a cartoon band, one is a song performed by a creepy character in a whacko movie, and one is the text of an online comic strip put to music. Yeah, some strange stuff. Bookending this bizarre trifecta, the other two featured covers spotlight two new free tribute EPs.
For the first time, though, we’re actually bringing you ten Bandcamp covers. Focusing our main selection on the oddball left a lot of terrific, more traditional covers by the wayside. In a week with an unusually large number of quality releases, we just didn’t have the heart to leave them behind, so find bonus covers of Huey Lewis and the News, the Fauves, Bing Crosby, Johnny Cash, and the Ronettes below the main set.
